Dawg '90 was the first record David Grisman released on Acoustic Disc, the label he started in order to own what he made. It came out in 1990 and brought him his first Grammy nomination.
All ten pieces are his own, and the band around him had changed shape since the Warner years: Matt Eakle's flute took the front line beside the mandolin, the first wind instrument to do so, with John Carlini on guitar, Jim Kerwin on bass and Joe Craven on percussion and violin. Mark O'Connor and Matt Glaser guest on fiddles. The writing ranges from the shuffle of "Chili Dawg" and the Django-shaped "Hot Club Swing" to "Sativa," which runs past twelve minutes.
