Don't Cheat in Our Hometown, released in 1983, marked a decisive moment in Ricky Skaggs's campaign to bring traditional bluegrass values back to a mainstream country audience. The album's title track, a revival of a Flatt and Scruggs recording, became a genuine country hit while sounding nothing like the smooth countrypolitan productions dominating Nashville radio at the time. Skaggs had come through Ralph Stanley's Clinch Mountain Boys, J.D. Crowe's New South, and Emmylou Harris's Hot Band, accumulating the musical credibility to make a record on his own terms. The record helped initiate the neotraditionalist movement in country music.
