Everybody's Talkin', released on Ricky Skaggs's Ceili and Skaggs Family imprint in 2002, is a solo album from Paul Brewster, the clear, high tenor who spent roughly a decade with the Osborne Brothers before joining Skaggs's Kentucky Thunder in 1995. Skaggs returns the favor here, joining a lineup of top Nashville players — Stuart Duncan on fiddle, Mark Fain on bass, and others — behind Brewster's lead. The Fred Neil title song becomes a bluegrass vehicle, and the set moves through gospel numbers, originals, and well-chosen covers, all built to feature the penetrating tenor Brewster had spent his career refining inside two of the music's most demanding organizations. The record reflects that long apprenticeship: traditional-leaning vocal bluegrass delivered with the assurance of a singer who learned harmony at close range from masters of the form.
