Fiddler's Green (Sugar Hill SUG-CD 4006, circa 1989) is a Tim O'Brien solo recording made during his years as a member of Hot Rize, the Colorado progressive bluegrass quartet. O'Brien plays fiddle as the central instrument throughout, exploring acoustic folk, old-time, and country-derived repertoire with the broad musical range that would define his long career as a solo artist, session player, songwriter, and collaborator. Sugar Hill Records provided a platform for O'Brien's solo projects alongside his Hot Rize commitments, and this album documents his solo voice already fully formed: a synthesis of bluegrass virtuosity, singer-songwriter sensibility, and deep familiarity with the acoustic American tradition. His fiddle work draws on Texas and Appalachian styles without being bound by either, anticipating the eclectic musical fluency he would continue to develop for decades.
