Fly Me to Frisco, Jimmy Martin's 1974 MCA release (MCA-435), arrived as Decca had completed its transition into MCA Records and Martin's long major-label run was winding toward its end. The title track was recorded in March 1973 at the label's Nashville studio, with the Sunny Mountain Boys lineup of the period framing Martin's familiar hard-driving rhythm guitar and confident lead. The album draws on Martin's standard mix of mountain ballads, gospel material, and uptempo bluegrass numbers, alongside contemporary country material the label saw as commercial. By the mid-1970s the Sunny Mountain Boys' role as the music's most demanding finishing school was beginning to be eclipsed by the bands its alumni — J.D. Crowe foremost — were now leading.
