Fred Neil cover

"Fred Neil," released in 1966 on Capitol Records (ST-2665) and produced by Nik Venet, is the second and most celebrated album by the Florida-born Greenwich Village singer-songwriter and guitarist. The record includes "Everybody's Talkin'" — later a number six hit for Harry Nilsson in the "Midnight Cowboy" soundtrack — and "The Dolphins," subsequently covered by Tim Buckley, Richie Havens, and many others. Neil's deep, resonant baritone and jazz-and-blues-touched fingerpicked guitar style made him a singular presence in the mid-1960s folk scene. The album was reissued in 1969 as "Everybody's Talkin'" to capitalize on the Nilsson hit. Neil effectively retired in the early 1970s to advocate for dolphin welfare, lending his legacy a mythic quality; the album remains a key proto-Americana touchstone.
