Gene Autry's Western Classics is a 1947 Columbia Records album (C-120) collecting the singing cowboy's most celebrated recordings. Born in Tioga, Texas, in 1907, Autry rose from radio entertainer to the preeminent cowboy star of film, radio, and record. The set gathers signature numbers including "Back in the Saddle Again," "Home on the Range," "Mexicali Rose," and "Red River Valley" — recordings that had defined the Western ballad tradition throughout the 1930s and 1940s. Later reissued on LP as Columbia CL 6020, the album appeared at the height of Autry's postwar popularity and stands as a foundational document of the Hollywood singing-cowboy tradition and the western swing and cowboy song repertoire that fed into early country and bluegrass.
