Heartbreak City is a 1994 album released by the Rarely Herd on Pinecastle Records (PRC 1029). The Athens County, Ohio quintet—Jim Stack (guitar, lead vocals), Alan Stack (mandolin, fiddle, vocals), Dan Brooks (dobro, vocals), Calvin Leport (banjo), and Jeff Weaver (bass, vocals)—deliver their second Pinecastle album with production by Butch Baldassari, recorded in Nashville. The original five-piece lineup, which had won the SPBGMA Entertaining Band of the Year award, was building momentum on the festival circuit. The Rarely Herd—whose name is a wordplay on the Seldom Scene—built their reputation on a blend of crowd-pleasing showmanship and solid bluegrass musicianship rooted in the Ohio Valley tradition.
