Special Consensus's Hey Y'All, released on Turquoise Records (TR-CS-5076) in 1991, captures the Chicago-based band in an early lineup configuration. Greg Cahill plays banjo and sings; Marty Marrone, guitar and vocals; Dallas Wayne, bass and vocals—later a prominent country radio personality; Al Murphy, fiddle; and Don Stiernberg, mandolin—a protégé of Jethro Burns and one of the leading jazz mandolinists in the Chicago scene. Turquoise was a small Midwest independent focused on acoustic music; the band recorded one additional album for the label before moving to Pinecastle and, later, Compass. Stiernberg's jazz-inflected mandolin lends the record an unusual harmonic texture for a traditionally rooted bluegrass ensemble.
