"High on a Mountain," released in 1973 on Rounder Records (Rounder 0019), is an album by Ola Belle Reed — the North Carolina Appalachian singer, songwriter, and clawhammer banjoist who was a central figure in connecting old-time mountain tradition to the urban folk revival. Reed is joined by Alan Reed, David Reed, Bill Runkle, Billy Sage, Dick Staber, Jerry McCoury, and a young Del McCoury among the supporting players. The title composition — her own song — has been recorded over one hundred times, by McCoury, Tim O'Brien, Marty Stuart, and many others. The Library of Congress added the album to the National Recording Registry in 2019, citing its cultural, historical, and aesthetic significance — a long-overdue recognition for an artist who spent decades as a living bridge between the Southern mountains and the American roots revival.
