Home Is Where the Heart Is, released by mandolinist and composer David Grisman in 1988, captures the warm acoustic sensibility that had come to define his post-Dawg music aesthetic. Grisman's ensemble playing here leans toward accessible melody without sacrificing the improvisational depth that his earlier recordings established. Little Willie, the sole tracked selection in the catalog entry, exemplifies the album's mix of string-band affection and jazz-informed phrasing. Grisman had by this point assembled a circle of collaborators who could move fluidly between idioms, and the record benefits from that collective ease. While not as widely discussed as his landmark 1970s work, the album holds a comfortable place in his discography as an honest document of where his musical priorities rested at the close of the decade.
