Howlin’ at the Moon

Sam Bush

Album · 1998 · Sugar Hill SH-CD 3876

Sam Bush's Howlin' at the Moon, released on Sugar Hill Records (SH-CD 3876) in April 1998, deploys the New Grass Revival co-founder as bandleader across a wide-ranging Americana program. John Cowan plays bass and sings; Jon Randall Stewart, guitar and vocals; J.D. Crowe, banjo; Darrell Scott, guitar; Jerry Douglas, dobro and lap steel; Béla Fleck, banjo; and Emmylou Harris contributes harmony vocals as a guest. Bush handles mandolin, electric mandolin, fiddle, and lead vocals throughout. The presence of both Crowe—a foundational hard-driving banjo voice—and Fleck on the same session captures Bush's characteristic breadth as a collaborator, while Harris's cameo and the Scott-Randall singer-songwriter element give the album a warm Americana center.
