I Want to Be Like Jesus is a Larry Sparks gospel album released on Crosscut CR-1125, featuring Sparks on guitar and lead vocals alongside Scott Napier, Josh McMurray, and Matt Madden. Sparks — a veteran Ohio-based guitarist and singer who spent his earliest professional years as a teenager in the Stanley Brothers band — brought to his devotional recordings the same raw emotional sincerity that distinguished his secular bluegrass. His vocals, shaped in part by Carter Stanley's brooding example, carry these gospel texts with understated conviction rather than revival-meeting exuberance. The album reflects Sparks's lifelong commitment to plainly stated, deeply felt bluegrass gospel, a dimension of his artistry as central to his identity as his celebrated version of "John Deere Tractor."
