Sam Bush's Ice Caps: Peaks of Telluride, released on Sugar Hill (SUG-CD 3917) in July 2000, compiles sixteen tracks drawn from Bush's performances at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival across more than a decade. Jon Randall plays guitar and vocals; John Cowan, bass and vocals; Béla Fleck, banjo; Jerry Douglas, dobro and lap steel; Darrell Scott, guitar; John Magnie, accordion; and Larry Atamanuik, drums. Not a festival-wide compilation but a document of Bush's own Telluride sets, the album captures the Colorado mountain festival that served as a home ground for the newgrass movement—a stage where electric mandolin, jazz improvisation, and rock rhythms regularly met traditional picking through Bush's restless and expansive musical intelligence.
