In the Blue Room, released in 2006, is a solo project from Alan Bibey, the mandolinist best known for his years with IIIrd Tyme Out. Bibey's mandolin playing has always been characterized by a clean, singing tone and a disciplined approach to melody that serves ensemble singing without calling undue attention to itself. In the Blue Room gives him space to demonstrate what that control sounds like when the spotlight narrows. The album is oriented toward original songwriting as much as instrumental display, placing it in a middle space between the showcase record and the band record. Bibey's craftsmanship is evident throughout, as is his roots in the North Carolina bluegrass tradition.
