In the Mountaintops to Roam, the 2005 album from David Peterson & 1946, makes its intentions plain in the band’s own name — bluegrass as it sounded when the classic band crystallized. Peterson sings lead and plays guitar at the head of a formidable Nashville cast: Mike Compton on mandolin, Charlie Cushman on banjo, Michael Cleveland on fiddle, Rob Ickes and Kent Blanton filling out the ensemble, with Larry Marrs’s baritone in the harmony stack. The fourteen tracks lean on the first-generation repertoire — including “Bluebirds Are Singing for Me,” the Mac Wiseman–credited standard — alongside Peterson originals cut from the same cloth. It is revivalism of the scholarly kind: period repertoire, period drive, played by some of the finest traditional musicians of their generation.
