Jim and Jesse

Jim & Jesse

Album · 1970 · Double J DJ 1003

Jim and Jesse (Double J DJ 1003) is a studio album from Jim and Jesse McReynolds, the Coeburn, Virginia brothers whose split-string mandolin technique and tight sibling harmony defined one of the most influential approaches to ensemble bluegrass since their earliest professional recordings, presented here on the brothers' own Double J label. Jim McReynolds plays guitar and sings lead; Jesse McReynolds plays mandolin and sings tenor; Allen Shelton plays banjo; Carl Jackson plays guitar; and Junior Huskey holds the bass. Double J allowed the brothers to record and release material outside the Epic Records contract that had given them their widest commercial reach, preserving the ensemble in a format controlled by the principals and free from the production compromises that label recording sometimes required.
