John Prine, released in 1971 on Atlantic (SD 7240), is John Prine's debut album, produced by Arif Mardin at American Recording Studio in Memphis with Memphis-session backing. Prine plays acoustic guitar and sings on a record that introduced a catalog of songs that would carry through American folk and country music for the next half-century — "Sam Stone," "Hello in There," "Paradise," "Angel from Montgomery," "Far from Me," "Donald and Lydia." Kris Kristofferson had caught Prine at a Chicago club at Steve Goodman's urging and championed him to Atlantic, leading to the deal that produced this album. Rolling Stone later placed the LP at number 452 on its 500 Greatest Albums list, and the bluegrass world adopted most of its key songs as standards.
