Kentucky Blue is an album by the Bluegrass Alliance on the American Heritage label (AH 401-522), recorded at Starday Studio in Nashville in December 1975 and dated 1975 in the Bluegrass Discography. Lonnie Peerce, the band’s leader, plays fiddle and is credited as producer.
The band on the record is Vince Gill on lead guitar, rhythm guitar, dobro and lead vocals, Al White on mandolin, rhythm guitar and lead vocals, Bill Millet on banjo, Peerce on fiddle and Marshall Billingsly on bass, with Peerce on tenor and Millet on baritone vocals behind the leads. Buddy Emmons adds pedal steel and Karl Himmel drums on four of the tracks. Gill was eighteen at the time of the sessions, and had joined the Alliance in 1975; Pure Prairie League, which he fronted from 1978 to 1982, came later.
The program includes Billy Henson’s “Lonesome Feeling,” Lester Flatt’s “Why Don’t You Tell Me So,” Paul Anka’s “It Doesn’t Matter Anymore,” Paul Siebel’s “Louise” and Ralph and Carter Stanley’s “Lonesome River.” White wrote the instrumental “Frodo’s Journey,” and Peerce wrote “Not Seeing You Again.” During the 1970s the Alliance served as an internship for young, progressive bluegrass pickers.
