Sam Bush's Laps in Seven, released on Sugar Hill (SUG-CD 4013) in 2006, draws its title from Bush's observation of his dog drinking water in a 7/4 pulse—a characteristic piece of newgrass wit. Kevin Grantt and Byron House handle upright bass; Scott Vestal, banjo; and Tim Carbone of Railroad Earth, fiddle and strings. Guests include Emmylou Harris, Buddy Miller, Jean-Luc Ponty, and Tim O'Brien. Bush plays mandolin, fiddle, guitar, and sings lead throughout. The album captures him in peak form as composer, arranger, and ensemble player—bringing acoustic pickers, a French jazz violinist, and country harmonists into a set that exemplifies his decades-long project of expanding bluegrass's outermost edges.
