Live at the Down Home is NewFound Road’s first live album, released by Rounder on April 26, 2011 (11661-9106-2). It was recorded on December 4, 2010, at The Down Home in Johnson City, Tennessee, a venue founded in 1976 as a listening room, and engineered by David Hall.
The band is Tim Shelton on guitar and lead vocals, Josh Miller on banjo and guitar with lead and harmony vocals, Joe Booher on mandolin and Jamey Booher on bass, both singing harmony, with Jim VanCleve, the fiddler of Mountain Heart, sitting in as a guest. It was the band’s third album for Rounder. Shelton said the set drew on traditional and bluesy material along with the more contemporary songs the band played in its shows, including two new songs by Miller.
The thirteen tracks, one of them a band introduction, include “Ruben,” Jackson Browne’s “These Days,” “Please Come to Boston,” “Room at the Top of the Stairs,” Tom T. Hall’s “That’s How I Got to Memphis,” and Bill Withers’s “Ain’t No Sunshine,” which runs close to eight minutes. A DVD shot at the same show was announced to follow the CD.
