Live on the Radio

Red Allen and the Kentuckians

Album · 1966 · Acoustic Disc ACD-AO 50023

Live on the Radio (Acoustic Disc ACD-AO 50023) is a broadcast recording from David Grisman and Harley "Red" Allen, preserving a live performance from the duo in the informal, session-style format that Acoustic Disc — Grisman's San Rafael label — used to document acoustic performers in non-studio contexts. Grisman plays mandolin; Allen plays guitar and sings; Bobby Diamond contributes additional instrumental work; Porter Church holds the bass. Allen — whose long career had included time with the Osborne Brothers and the Greenbriar Boys before extensive work as a solo performer and sideman — brings a direct, warm tenor and easy ensemble sensibility to the radio broadcast context. Grisman's mandolin, moving between the bluegrass tradition Allen represented and the jazz-inflected approach Grisman had developed through the David Grisman Quintet, finds a comfortable common ground in the live acoustic format.
