Lonesome and Blue: The Complete County Recordings (Rebel REB-1128, 2004) gathers Red Allen's two County Records LPs — "Bluegrass Country" (1965) and "Red Allen and the Kentuckians" (1966) — with two previously unreleased tracks, totaling 25 recordings made at Mastertone and WBAI Studios in New York. The sessions document Allen's Kentuckians at their most potent: David Grisman on mandolin and Jerry McCoury on bass bring a forward-leaning drive that bridges hard bluegrass and the emerging progressive currents of the mid-1960s. Produced by David Grisman, the 2004 Rebel reissue restored these essential recordings to availability for a new generation of listeners and placed Allen's work within the lineage of seminal mid-century bluegrass that runs from Monroe through the subsequent generation of stylistic innovators.
