Long List of Heartaches (Rounder 11661-0583-2, 2006) is the Grascals’ second album and their second for Rounder. The band was founded in Nashville in February 2004 by Terry Eldredge, Jamie Johnson, Jimmy Mattingly and David Talbot, who invited Terry Smith and Danny Roberts to join. BGD lists the album’s sessions at Gravity Recording Studios in Nashville in April 2006, with Eldredge and Johnson on guitar and lead vocals, Mattingly on fiddle, Roberts on mandolin, Talbot on banjo and Smith on bass.
The thirteen tracks bring in several guests. Dierks Bentley sings on “Being Me,” the Jordanaires sing harmony on “Did You Forget God Today,” George Jones is credited with a recitation on “Don’t Tell Mama,” and Steve Wariner plays guitar on “Hoedown in Motown,” which he co-wrote with Harley Allen. Johnson and Eldredge share the lead singing, and “Cut Your Wheels,” written by Talbot, Roberts and Mattingly, is an instrumental.
The album was nominated for the Grammy for Best Bluegrass Album at the 2007 awards, and the Grascals were named IBMA Entertainer of the Year in 2006 and 2007. Talbot left in December 2006 and was replaced on banjo by Aaron McDaris.
