Longview (Rounder CD 0386, 1997) is the debut album from one of traditional bluegrass's most celebrated supergroups, an idea born when Dudley Connell, Don Rigsby, and James King sang together at the 1994 Denton, North Carolina festival. Producer Ken Irwin brought all six musicians to Long View Farm in December 1995 to record mostly live with minimal overdubs: Connell (guitar, vocals), King (guitar, vocals), Rigsby (mandolin, vocals), Joe Mullins (banjo, vocals), Glen Duncan (fiddle, vocals), and Marshall Wilborn (bass). The album reached the Top 15 on Gavin's Americana chart, won the 1998 IBMA Recorded Event of the Year, and took IBMA Song of the Year for "Lonesome Old Home." Drawing from lesser-known classic-era material, it remains a landmark of neo-traditional bluegrass.
