Lord Build Me a Cabin, released in 1965, is a gospel record from Charlie Monroe, the older brother of Bill Monroe and his partner in the Monroe Brothers duo that defined old-time and proto-bluegrass harmonies in the late 1930s. By 1965, Charlie had long been recording separately from Bill, and his output had settled into the traditional country-gospel mode that suited his warm baritone and his religious convictions. The title song is a prayer for a dwelling in heaven, the domestic metaphor for salvation that runs through American gospel from the shape-note tradition forward. The album is a document of Southern gospel practice in the mid-1960s, rooted in the same Appalachian traditions that formed Bill.
