Mac Wiseman Sings Gordon Lightfoot (CMH Records LP-6217, 1977) pairs the warm baritone of bluegrass patriarch Mac Wiseman with a dozen of Gordon Lightfoot's folk-pop compositions in a country-bluegrass setting. The session was produced by Arthur Smith (mandolin, dobro), with his son Clay Smith on acoustic guitar, Eddie Adcock on five-string banjo, Jim Buchanan on fiddle, Tommy Brooks on bass, and Rob Thorne on drums. Wiseman's phrasing brought Appalachian gravity to material — "Early Morning Rain," "If You Could Read My Mind," "Sundown" — that had previously lived in the folk-pop mainstream, demonstrating bluegrass's capacity to absorb the singer-songwriter repertoire of the era. The album was reissued on CD in 2002 and stands as a singular meeting of two distinct North American folk traditions.
