Memory of Your Smile by Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys, from 1982, finds the patriarch of the Clinch Mountain sound continuing the unbroken tradition he had maintained since Carter Stanley's death in 1966. By the early 1980s Ralph had assembled one of the strongest versions of his band, keeping faith with the old-time-rooted, high lonesome style that had always set the Stanley aesthetic apart from the more polished mainstream. His clawhammer and three-finger banjo work remained idiosyncratic and instantly identifiable, and his nasal, archaic vocal delivery carried authority accumulated over three decades of performing. The album is a reliable entry point into Stanley's prolific post-Carter discography.
