Midnight Loneliness is a 1992 debut album released by the Rarely Herd on Pinecastle Records (PRC 1009). Jim Stack (guitar, lead vocals), Alan Stack (mandolin, fiddle, vocals), Dan Brooks (dobro, vocals), Calvin Leport (banjo), and Jeff Weaver (bass, vocals) were recorded at Suite 2000 in Nashville by producer Butch Baldassari. The Athens County, Ohio band—whose name is a wordplay on the Seldom Scene—had formed in 1989 and showcased at IBMA in their debut year, quickly establishing themselves nationally with a sound that balanced traditional technique with an accessible, entertainment-forward approach. Midnight Loneliness launched what would become one of the Midwest's most enduring bluegrass careers, sustained across six Pinecastle albums through the decade.
