"Modern Hymns," released in 2008 on Appleseed Recordings (APR CD 1111), is Darrell Scott's tribute album to songwriters he considers formative — Gordon Lightfoot, Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, John Hartford, Guy Clark, and Hoyt Axton — recorded with a large cast at Blackbird Studios in Nashville. The ensemble includes Dirk Powell, Jordan Tice, Stuart Duncan, and Tye North, alongside guests Alison Krauss, Del McCoury, Tim O'Brien, Sam Bush, and John Cowan. Rather than covering mainstream hits, Scott chose writers from the literary edge of folk and country, framing them as the hymns of a secular tradition. The album was praised as far above the usual covers-record standard and was later reissued digitally with a previously unreleased additional track.
