Much Further Out Than Inevitable: A Fiddle and Banjo Tribute to Some Music of John Hartford is a 2022 self-released album by John Showman and Chris Coole, the fiddle and clawhammer banjo core of the Toronto-based Lonesome Ace Stringband, a trio they have anchored together for more than twenty-five years. Released December 2, 2022, the album strips Hartford's music to its most elemental form—just Showman's fiddle and Coole's clawhammer banjo, unadorned and without percussion or additional voices. The twelve songs span Hartford's decades of output, drawing from Aereo-Plain, Mark Twang, and Good Old Boys, including "Long Hot Summer Days," "The Julia Belle Swain," and "Steamboat Whistle Blues." The album sits at the intersection of old-time, bluegrass, and literary folk—faithful to the spirit Hartford himself inhabited.
