Music Among Friends cover

Music Among Friends by Jim and Jesse and the Virginia Boys, released on their JJ label in 1991, is a late-period entry in a catalog that stretches back to the early 1950s. By this point Jim and Jesse McReynolds had been performing together for four decades, and the easy familiarity in their playing and singing reflects that accumulated shared history. Jesse's cross-picking mandolin technique — developed independently and representing a genuine innovation in the instrument's bluegrass application — is as individual and immediately recognizable as ever. The album covers the kind of mixed program — gospel, secular standards, and originals — that the brothers had always favored, and it serves as a comfortable document of two musicians in full command of their craft.
