Pancho & Lefty (Epic FE 37958, 1983) is a landmark outlaw country collaboration between Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson, produced by Chips Moman. Session musicians include guitarists Grady Martin, Reggie Young, Johnny Christopher, and Lewis Talley, with Don Markham of the Strangers on horn. The title track — Townes Van Zandt's road ballad, suggested during sessions by Nelson's daughter Lana — hit #1 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart; the album spent eight weeks at #1 on the Billboard Country Albums chart, and "Reasons to Quit" reached the Top 10 as a second single. It remains the defining document of the Haggard–Nelson creative partnership and a cornerstone of the outlaw movement. Note: the catalog lists "Martin Stevens" as co-artist; the actual co-artist is Willie Nelson.
