Pickin' and Singin', a Larry Sparks and the Lonesome Ramblers release of 1975, belongs to the mid-1970s stretch when Sparks was steadily building his working catalog through a series of small-label albums. The Lonesome Ramblers' configuration of the period framed Sparks's distinctive bluesy guitar work and soulful lead vocal with a tight bluegrass ensemble. The album sat in the productive working stretch between his Starday and King Bluegrass periods and his late-1970s consolidation on the Rebel and Old Homestead labels — the years that would eventually establish him as one of the most respected traditional bluegrass voices of his generation.
