Portrait, released by Sugar Hill Records in 1993, is the first album Doc Watson made after the death of his son and longtime partner Merle Watson — with Jack Lawrence filling the second-guitar chair Merle had held for two decades. The album frames Watson with an all-star bluegrass cast — Jerry Douglas on dobro, Sam Bush on mandolin, Mark O'Connor on fiddle, Alan O'Bryant on banjo, Pat Enright on harmony — across a program that opens with the old Delmore Brothers song I'm Worried Now and includes Doc on harmonica, banjo, and even autoharp (on the A.P. Carter song Storms on the Ocean) alongside his flatpick guitar. The album marked the transition into Doc's later working life without Merle.
