Sam Bush's Radio John: Songs of John Hartford, released on Smithsonian Folkways (SFW40254) in November 2022, is a tribute to Bush's mentor Hartford, who first introduced him to the possibilities of bluegrass at the Bean Blossom Festival in 1971. Bush plays mandolin, fiddle, guitar, and bass—handling virtually all instruments on many tracks—and sings lead throughout. Christy Reid contributes harmony vocals; Wes Corbett, banjo; Stephen Mougin, guitar and vocals; Todd Park, bass; and Chris Brown, drums on additional tracks. The Smithsonian Folkways imprint adds institutional weight appropriate to the subject: Hartford was among the most original and eccentric minds in American roots music, and Bush's lifelong debt to him gives the record an uncommon personal urgency.
