Ramblin' Boy is an early album from J.D. Crowe and the Kentucky Mountain Boys, recorded during a formative period for one of bluegrass music's most important banjo stylists. Crowe, a native of Lexington, Kentucky, came up under Jimmy Martin and developed a three-finger style simultaneously grounded in Scruggs-tradition and pointed toward what would become progressive bluegrass. The 1974 album captures the band before their landmark New South record reshaped the genre, showing Crowe's taste for strong vocal material alongside his unmistakable banjo work. The record stands as documentation of Crowe's work in the transitional period just before he broke open new territory for the music.
