Restless on the Farm is a 1998 Sugar Hill Records album (SH-CD 3875) and Jerry Douglas's seventh solo release, a wide-ranging showcase moving through bluegrass, hard country, blues, and traditional Irish music. The core group includes Russ Barenberg on guitar, Tim O'Brien on guitar and vocals, and Viktor Krauss on bass, with guest contributions from Maura O'Connell, Steve Earle, Bela Fleck, and Sam Bush. O'Brien's presence on several tracks gives the album a folk-bluegrass warmth that complements Douglas's dobro and lap steel work. By 1998 Douglas had long since established himself as the defining voice on his instrument; Restless on the Farm demonstrates the range of contexts — from mountain music to swing to Celtic — that his technique could inhabit without strain.
