Rubber Soul

The Beatles

Album · 1965

Rubber Soul (Parlophone PMC 1267, 1965) is the sixth United Kingdom studio album by the Beatles, recorded at EMI's Abbey Road Studios and released in December 1965 with John Lennon and Paul McCartney sharing lead vocals and principal songwriting throughout. George Harrison contributes lead guitar on every track and introduces the sitar on "Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)," the first appearance of the instrument on a Beatles studio record; Ringo Starr plays drums. Produced by George Martin, the album represented a deliberate turn toward more introspective lyrics and harmonically adventurous chord progressions, moving the group's ambitions well beyond their earlier pop blueprint. "In My Life," "Norwegian Wood," and "Michelle" each became widely studied compositions in subsequent decades, and Rubber Soul is broadly regarded as the opening chapter in the group's late creative period.
