Ruby (Capitol Records ST 795, 1968) is a studio album from Buck Owens, the Sherman, Texas-born guitarist, singer, and bandleader who built the Bakersfield Sound and became country music's most commercially dominant act of the mid-1960s. Owens plays guitar and sings; Don Rich plays fiddle and lead guitar; and Drew Garrett and Gary Dark contribute additional instrumental work. The album takes its title from Owens' recording of "Ruby (Are You Mad at Your Man)" and presents the sharp, electric Telecaster-driven sound that Owens and Rich defined in Bakersfield as a deliberate alternative to the orchestrated Nashville production dominating the country charts. Rich — Owens' musical director and closest collaborator — brought the fiddle and lead-guitar interplay that gave the Buckaroos their distinctive twin-string identity.
