Salt of the Earth is a Ricky Skaggs album released on his own Skaggs Family Records label (SKFR-905002), continuing the bluegrass direction he committed to following his return from the commercial country mainstream in the 1990s. After a decade as one of country music's biggest stars, Skaggs redirected his career toward the traditional acoustic music that had formed his earliest musical education — growing up in Kentucky, learning from the Stanley Brothers, earning his professional stripes in Emmylou Harris's Hot Band. The Skaggs Family label gave him full artistic control, and Salt of the Earth reflects the resulting freedom: uncompromised traditional bluegrass produced to a professional standard by a musician whose technical gifts and stylistic knowledge place him among the form's most authoritative modern practitioners.
