Sara Watkins's self-titled debut, released on Nonesuch Records (516987) in April 2009, was produced by Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones, who also contributes bass, organ, and harmony vocals throughout. Watkins plays fiddle, ukulele, and sings lead; her brother Sean Watkins plays guitar and harmony vocals; Dave Rawlings and Gillian Welch each contribute electric guitar and harmonies; Rayna Gellert, fiddle; and Byron House, upright bass. Benmont Tench, Pete Thomas, Greg Leisz, and Chris Thile appear on additional tracks. Released in the wake of Nickel Creek's initial hiatus, the album earned strong critical reception as a fully formed solo statement—bridging the acoustic bluegrass world where Watkins first rose to prominence and the broader Americana landscape she has since inhabited.
