Special Consensus's Scratch Gravel Road, released on Compass Records (7 4573 2) in March 2012, showcases a lineup in which Rick Faris plays mandolin rather than guitar—a distinction from his later recording roles with the band. Greg Cahill plays banjo; Dustin Benson, guitar and vocals; David Thomas, upright bass. Guests include Stuart Duncan, Chris Jones, and Josh Williams; produced by Alison Brown. Benson was then the newest band member, and the record's eclecticism—ranging from Cahill originals to reimagined traditional material—reflects the band's characteristic Chicago synthesis of regional bluegrass and broad musical curiosity. The album earned a Grammy Award nomination for Best Bluegrass Album, the first of two Grammy nods the band would receive within a decade.
