“Shine On” is a 1983 album by George Jones on Epic Records (FE 38406), produced by Billy Sherrill and recorded at Sound Emporium in Nashville. It followed “He Stopped Loving Her Today,” the 1980 single that spent 18 weeks at number one on the country chart. Three singles came from the album: the title song, released in January 1983, reached number three on Billboard’s Hot Country Singles chart; “I Always Get Lucky with You,” released in April, reached number one; and “Tennessee Whiskey,” released in August, reached number two.
“I Always Get Lucky with You” was written by Merle Haggard, Freddy Powers, Gary Church and Tex Whitson. Haggard had recorded it on his 1981 album Big City without releasing it as a single, and his manager, Whitson, pitched it to Sherrill. It was Jones’s ninth and last number one as a solo artist. “Tennessee Whiskey,” by Dean Dillon and Linda Hargrove, had first been recorded by David Allan Coe as the title track of his 1981 album. The album also has two songs by Bobby Braddock, “She Hung the Moon” and “I’d Rather Have What We Had,” and ends with O. B. McClinton’s “Ol’ George Stopped Drinkin’ Today.”
