Showin’ My Roots

Donna Ulisse

Album · 2013 · Hadley Music Group HMG 1012

Showin' My Roots, released in 2013 on Hadley Music Group (HMG 1012), is Donna Ulisse's bluegrass reframing of country classics, co-produced by Ulisse and guitarist Bryan Sutton. Ulisse sings lead over a Nashville session lineup that includes Sutton on guitar, Scott Vestal on banjo, Rob Ickes on Dobro, Andy Leftwich on fiddle and mandolin, and Viktor Krauss and Byron House on bass, with harmonies from John Cowan, Carl Jackson, Larry Cordle, and Larry Stephenson. Sam Bush joins Ulisse for a duet on "Take This Hammer." The repertoire pulls country chestnuts into a bluegrass setting, and the record sits midway through Ulisse's run as one of the most consistent contemporary bluegrass songwriters — a parallel statement of her interpretive side.
