Showin’ My Roots was released by Hadley Music Group on 15 October 2013 (HMG 1012) and was co-produced by Donna Ulisse and guitarist Bryan Sutton. Most of the songs are country material from the 1960s and ’70s: Loretta Lynn’s “Fist City” and “Somebody Somewhere,” Dolly Parton’s “In the Good Old Days When Times Were Bad,” Tammy Wynette’s “Your Good Girl’s Gonna Go Bad” and Hank Locklin’s “Send Me the Pillow You Dream On,” alongside Rodney Crowell’s “One Way Rider” and two Stanley Brothers pieces, “How Mountain Girls Can Love” and “If That’s the Way You Feel.” Ulisse wrote two songs for the record with her husband, Rick Stanley: the title track and “I’ve Always Had a Song I Could Lean On.”
Ulisse plays guitar. Scott Vestal is on banjo, Rob Ickes on Dobro, Andy Leftwich on mandolin and fiddle, and Sutton on guitar, with Viktor Krauss or Byron House on bass. Sam Bush sings the duet “Take This Hammer” with her and plays mandolin on “Fist City,” where Larry Cordle and Carl Jackson sing harmony; Larry Stephenson sings tenor on “How Mountain Girls Can Love,” and Fayssoux McLean, Jerry Salley and Rick Stanley sing harmony on the two new songs.
