Sing Unto Him a New Song

Jim & Jesse

Album · 1966 · Epic BN 26204

Sing Unto Him a New Song is a 1966 Epic Records gospel album (BN 26204) by Jim & Jesse & The Virginia Boys, recorded in Nashville during the brothers' productive major-label period on Epic (1962–1970). The session features Allen Shelton on banjo, Floyd "Lightning" Chance on bass, Jimmy Brock on fiddle, top Nashville session guitarist Grady Martin, and Jesse McReynolds on mandolin alongside Jim McReynolds's lead vocals. The album is a full program of sacred material in the traditional bluegrass gospel style — a genre convention of the era that led virtually every active bluegrass act to record at least one dedicated "church album." Martin's presence as session guitarist reflects Epic's Nashville A-list production sensibility and the label's investment in the brothers' commercial standing.
