The Country Gentlemen were the band that proved bluegrass could think. Formed in Washington, D.C. in 1957, they took the music out of the rural South and into the coffeehouses, colleges, and folk-revival concert halls — and in doing so they invented what came to be called "progressive bluegrass."
Their early singles were cut for the Starday label beginning in 1957, recorded in small Washington-area studios — radio stations and the modest Ben Adelman studio — with a lineup that soon settled into its classic form: Charlie Waller's warm lead voice and steady guitar, John Duffey's startling high tenor and inventive mandolin, the banjo of Bill Emerson and then Eddie Adcock, and Tom Gray's melodic bass. From 1961 they also recorded for the folk label Folkways, which suited their growing reputation among urban revival audiences.
What set the Gentlemen apart was repertoire and arrangement. Alongside traditional numbers they recorded folk songs, contemporary material, even pop tunes, reworked with intricate harmony and a willingness to experiment that no earlier bluegrass band had risked. "Bringing Mary Home," their eerie ghost-story hit, showed how far they could push a single and still reach a wide audience.
The Country Gentlemen became, in effect, a school of their own. Generations of progressive players passed through the band, and its example — that a bluegrass band could be literate, adventurous, and still swing hard — shaped everything from the newgrass movement to the modern festival circuit. Their singles caught that revolution in its first, fizzing form.
