The Country Gentlemen pioneered what later became known as progressive bluegrass — a Washington, D.C. group whose tight harmonies, adventurous song choices, and urban audience base reshaped what bluegrass could be. They drew freely from folk, pop, and country songwriters and became a training ground for much of the next generation of bluegrass stars.
