One Wide River to Cross, released by Rebel Records in 1971 (SLP 1497), is the Country Gentlemen's all-gospel album from a transitional moment — Charlie Waller now leading a lineup of Bill Emerson on banjo, Jimmy Gaudreau on mandolin, and Bill Yates on bass, after the departures of Duffey, Adcock, and Gray that had ended the classic period. The repertoire reaches across the bluegrass-gospel tradition, with a couple of Louvin Brothers numbers, Reno and Smiley's Using My Bible for a Roadmap, and traditional hymns like Sunny Side of Life and Gone Home. It stands as one of the first Country Gentlemen records of the post-classic era to establish that the band could continue convincingly without its founding members.
