Yesterday & Today, Vol. 1 was released by Rebel in 1973 (SLP-1521). It is a compilation of twelve tracks from sessions and performances between 1963 and 1971, and the Country Gentlemen lineup changes from track to track. The earliest are “Tom Dooley” and “I Never Will Marry,” recorded on 17 and 18 August 1963 at the Mooncusser Coffee House on Martha’s Vineyard, with Charlie Waller on guitar, Eddie Adcock on banjo, John Duffey on mandolin and Tom Gray on bass. “Electricity” and “California Blues (Blue Yodel #4),” with Duffey singing lead on the second, were recorded with the same four at Wynwood Recording Studios in Falls Church, Virginia, on 5 June 1964.

Four tracks date from 3 September 1967 at Watermelon Park in Berryville, Maryland, with Ed Ferris on bass: “Are You Waiting Just for Me?,” “Long Black Veil,” the instrumental “Under the Double Eagle” and “Get in Line Brother.” “When They Ring Those Golden Bells” was recorded on 16 March 1968 at Lloyd Studios in Riverdale, Maryland, with Waller and Adcock. The later lineups appear on three tracks made at R. D. Homer & Associates in Clinton, Maryland: “Mrs. Robinson” (December 1969, with Jimmy Gaudreau on mandolin and Bill Yates on bass), “Less of Me” (December 1970, with Bill Emerson back on banjo, Gaudreau, Mike Auldridge on dobro and Yates) and “The Fields Have Turned Brown” (December 1971, with Doyle Lawson on mandolin, Auldridge and Yates).
